| When the President speaks to the full Congress as he did this week for the State of the Union Address, he comes to the chambers of the House of Representatives. - Did you watch the State of the Union Address? The State of the Union is a very special speech when the President tells everyone how he feels things are going in our country. He also talks about the things he feels we should work on in the future, so it’s a great time to pray for President Bush and his team as they work to make things happen—the very things the President spoke of in his address, like victory in Iraq, the expansion of democracy in the world, support for out troops, using less oil and gasoline and much more.
- We’ve been praying for quite some time for the members of the Senate as they consider the affirmation of Judge Samuel Alito. Since they have now voted to affirm his nomination and he has been sworn in at the East Room of the White House, we can thank God for bringing this fine and godly man to the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court, praying that he will draw nearer to God than ever before as he prepares to join the other justices in the Court. Judge Alito thanked us all for our prayers, and promised to do everything he can to live up to the trust we have in him, so we definitely want to keep praying for him!
- Our troops continue to help the people of Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world, giving new hope and a desire for further freedom to so many, so we can pray for our troops, asking that God protect and encourage each one, helping them to do their jobs well. Pray especially for those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, that God will comfort and draw near to them when they feel sad.

Secretary of Transportation—Norman Mineta Norman Mineta has a terrific record of service to our country, and he has several “firsts” to his credit. He became the first Asian-American cabinet member during President Clinton’s administration and the first cabinet member to make the switch from a Democratic cabinet directly to a Republican one. He was appointed by President Bush at the beginning of his first term and has served with great dignity and success since January 2001.
In his job as the Secretary of Transportation, Norman Mineta oversees all the ways that people get around in our country--the waterways and highways, air travel and train travel, even the trucks that drive on our highways--all these are under his supervision. It is his job to ensure that travel is safe and fair for those who earn their living in transportation as well.
He has worked hard to make transportation safer in our country, and during the first four year’s of the President’s term, Secretary Mineta and his team successfully delivered the lowest vehicle fatality rate ever recorded, the highest safety belt usage rate ever recorded, and the lowest rail fatality level ever recorded. He has also worked with the states to lower the rule on blood alcohol in order to prevent drunk driving accidents. That’s a pretty impressive record, and it means that there are lots more Americans living without accidents and injury, which is great!
The Department of Transportation has 100,000 faithful employees and a $58.7 billion budget—that’s a lot to keep track of for starters.
Secretary Mineta and his family were among the 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry forced from their homes and into internment camps during World War II—that was a very sad chapter in our country. After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley, Secretary Mineta joined the Army in 1953 and served as an intelligence officer in Japan and Korea. He is married to Danealia (Deni) Mineta. He has two sons, David and Stuart Mineta, and two stepsons, Robert and Mark Brantner.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development—Alphonso Jackson Alphonso Jackson has been at the helm of the Department of Housing and Urban Development since March 31, 2004. In that role, he and his team work hard to provide affordable housing for all Americans while promoting economic development in our nation’s cities. HUD works hard to make our cities great places to live. They work to provide housing for the homeless, to help neighborhoods with big problems to tackle and solve them and to help every American realize the dream of home ownership.
Alphonso Jackson knows about the importance of good housing—he grew up in a family with 12 children! His father worked very hard at three jobs. He educated his children, and instilled the values that have helped Secretary Jackson as he leads HUD—among those the importance of giving back to the community.
Secretary Jackson holds a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in education administration from Truman State University. He received his law degree from Washington University School of Law. With his wife, Marcia, he has two grown daughters.

Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don't worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
--Psalm 37:7
And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks.
--Luke 11:9-10

What’s an Online Prayer Rally?
An Online Prayer Rally is a really great thing! It’s a way of using the Internet to honor God and help America—what could be neater than that?
Online means, of course, something that exists on the Internet, and you have to use your computer and go online to participate!
Prayer means…well, we sure hope you know what prayer means. But just in case, prayer means talking and listening to God—conversing with Him and enjoying His presence. Prayer can be just you and God, or you and one other person and God, or you and a bunch of people and God, or you and millions of people and God. It doesn’t matter how many people are praying to Him at once, because He has all the time in the world to hear each prayer and to respond with love, since He is outside of time!
Rally …A rally is a get-together of a group of people for the purpose of building enthusiasm, supporting a cause or encouraging a specific effort. If you’ve ever been to a pep rally at your school, you know what it’s all about.
The Presidential Prayer Team for Kids (along with the Presidential Prayer Team) is sponsoring our second President’s Day Online Prayer Rally on Monday, February 20. We’re calling kids, teens and adults across America to set aside a special time to pray for the President and the Nation. Now do you understand why it is called an Online Prayer Rally?
The OPR will be online. It will be a real thing that happens in space and time. Everyone won’t experience it in just the same way, but everyone will join with thousands of others and we’ll all be praying to our loving God and Father. What a great way to make the Internet serve the purposes of God!
The OPR will be all about prayer. Everyone’s prayers will be brought together in heaven and on the Internet to call out to God for our President and our Nation. Wow! It makes you wonder what incredible ways He will answer!
The OPR will rally everyone who participates to get even more excited about prayer. It will build us all up and encourage us to pray more and more because of what we experienced in the OPR.

Dear God, I pray with all my heart that you will guard and protect the United States of America with your powerful arm and your mighty vision. I pray that you will turn the hearts of all the people in our country to love and honor You by thoughtfully obeying the laws of our country. Please help the spirit of love—the love that comes from You—to grow in our country, so that everyone appreciates and cares about each other just as you want us to. Help us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. And help us all to love and appreciate our country more and more and to show it through good citizenship.
I pray that all the children, teens and adults in America will always do what is right in Your eyes, loving justice and mercy and behaving in humble and godly ways just like Jesus did. Make America a nation that is happy in You we ask with hearts full of faith, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
